Fast Company just posted an automotive design focused article entitled, "GM just opened a sprawling new design center that will help shape the future of its cars". You can read the original article in the co.design section here.
Featured in some of the writing, as well as several of the pictures embedded in the article you can see some of the Immersion Graphics, Inc. (IGI) large scale, high resolution, visualization systems, including the IGI DesignView.
The IGI DesignView is the digital version of a rolling board that was widely used by automotive design teams before large scale visualization was born.
That said, the largest display in this new facility is the 55'7" wide x 10'5" tall curved screen showing more than 76 million pixels of data (76,204,800 to be exact). Essentially there are three (3) 16:9 sections that can be viewed individually with varying content, or all together. This immense visualization system will be used for many purposes including design reviews and high level board and executive level presentations.
The capabilities of the new studio will allow the management and support staff to explore new ways of communicating design intent. This system will enhance excitement and passion in the design evaluation process for General Motors.
