AV is still quite male-dominated, and it can be challenging for a woman to carve out a career in AV, but today in the ever expanding audiovisual industry we see many successful women in every type of role in the industry!
We have talked in the past about the unique paths that individuals take when first discovering that opportunities exist in AV they might find fascinating, challenging, technical, dynamic and filled with possibilities to grow, learn and pursue a career in, and these opportunities are not just for men.
Most women report they were unaware of professional audio visual work during high school or college. They tell the stories of how they "fell into" the industry though some kind of unplanned series of events. Careers for Women in AV include sales/marketing, design, engineering, fabrication, installation, business support and operational leadership. And, the US leads the rest of the world with a women in AV percentage that is almost twice as high as everywhere else. Today many organizations exist to increase awareness of the opportunities that exist for Women in AV. One does not have to look far to find numerous resources that are focused on helping women achieve success in AV.
WAVIT (https://www.womeninavit.org) "WAVIT’s goal is to provide a network that supports and empowers women in the AV and IT industries, through education, outreach, and initiatives. We identified the need for a dedicated focus on activities and actions that support the “women of tomorrow” as they find their love of STEM, AV, IT, and parallel industries. We know that in order to increase the number of women in our industries, we have to pave a career path through outreach initiatives."
AVIXA Women's Council (https://www.avixa.org/membership/committees-councils/avixa-women-s-council) "If you are an Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association (AVIXA) member who wants to support women in our industry, you are invited to join this council. Their mission is to provide a global community of AVIXA members and other professionals committed to supporting and empowering women who work in the technology and AV industry."
AVIXA #GALSNGEAR (https://www.infocommshow.org/infocomm-2025/galsngear-meetup) "Meetup at InfoComm where industry-leading women share insights and foster connections in the AV community."
SoundGirls.org (https://soundgirls.org) "Sound Girls was established to provide women working in professional audio a community to come to for support and advice, and for empowerment and inspiration. Focuses on supporting women in audio engineering and related fields, with a mission to inspire and empower them."
Women's Audio Mission (https://womensaudiomission.org) "WAM is a nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of women/girls/gender-expansive individuals in music production and the recording arts. An organization dedicated to furthering the role of women in all aspects of the audio industry."
So, the answer is yes, there are women in the audio-visual (AV) industry. And while they are significantly underrepresented and the historical gender gap persists especially in technical and leadership roles, there is heavy support for their involvement. While the industry is continually evolving, follow the organizations and initiatives dedicated to supporting and empowering women in AV. IGI strives to encourage women in AV and currently, women at IGI represent 30% of our workforce.
