LED Finally Accepted by Automotive Design

Remember attending the IGI 4K Forums about a decade ago?  We were just starting to see direct view LED cabinets coming into the market.  We had been running our technology showcases for almost a decade at that point, and attendees were used to getting their noses right up to the screens where we were running the latest projector technology to inspect the clarity and detail of the image.

The very first LED were so harsh that no one dared to get close for fear of burning out their retinas. The earliest images looked "okay" from 15-20 feet from the display, but quickly degraded as you got closer.

Fast forward through the miniaturization of pixel pitch (how the pixel density is measured for direct view LED, or dvLED) and we had front row seats watching the pixels get smaller and smaller, as well as tighter and tighter together. Pixel pitches dropped below 2.0mm (the distance from once center of a pixel to the center of another), and then dropped below 1.6mm, to a game changing 1.2mm pixel pitch.

It has not stopped there, as we now have pixel pitches in the sub-1.0mm range, but the improvements in the quality from SMD (surface Mounted Diode) to COB (Chip On Board) as well as the vast leaps in the substrate that holds the pixels, we now have not only density, but contrast ratios that are the best of any display yet.

With the latest generation of dvLED, and the significant advances in image quality, automotive design managers are accepting the technology into their studios where the most valuable decisions are made.

IGI dvLED automotive design acceptance

As a long time specialist in the large scale, high resolution, visualization space IGI has been uniquely positioned to design and build a large number of custom dvLED systems including our latest product introduced over the last year – the IGI DesignView, which was designed to replace the old paper-based rolling boards used by automotive design and engineering teams in their workflows to hang full scale automotive prints for reference.

IGI has now installed thousands of individual dvLED units in custom designed systems. Some of the unique ultra-large PowerWalls IGI has designed and built stretch over 120 feet wide and 10 feet tall with millions of 1.2mm or 0.8mm pixel pitches.

About IGI:

Immersion Graphics, Inc. (IGI) provides audio visual design, engineering, consulting, product sales, control system programming, custom fabrication, installation, preventative maintenance, and extended support services out of its headquarters location in Detroit and west coast operation in Los Angeles. Additional offices are located in Indianapolis, and Grand Rapids.

Founded in 1998, IGI has installed numerous large-scale, ultra-high resolution systems throughout the U.S. in the automotive, higher education, medical, financial, and energy transmission markets, and for the United States military and other government agencies. Applications include industrial design, engineering and data visualization, mission-critical command & control room environments, presentation systems, video conferencing, digital signage, and a variety of commercial AV solutions for emerging markets where the simultaneous visualization of 3D models and complex data by a group is essential to effective decision making.
